GST registration and BAS cycles
Most business owners know BAS is due; fewer have chosen the reporting cycle that suits their cash flow.
Registering for GST
You must register for GST if your business has a GST turnover of $75,000 or more, or you expect to reach it in your first year. Taxi and ride-sourcing drivers must register regardless of turnover.
Monthly or quarterly
- GST turnover of $20 million or more: you must report GST monthly.
- Below that, quarterly is the default, and you can elect monthly.
Why some businesses choose monthly
- Smaller, more frequent payments, easier to manage.
- Faster refunds if you buy a lot of equipment or materials.
- Tighter monthly bookkeeping discipline.
Whichever you choose, set GST aside as you are paid. See Cash flow and BAS habits and GST on progress claims.
